Weekend Away in the Howgills, August 2024

A small group of us met up in the Howgills for a weekend of walking in these unique hills. Most were staying in the excellent B&B run by the lovely Jim and a new member, who has recently found our group was able to find accommodation in Kendal, just 10 minutes away.

The walks had been reccied by Mark and Dave P earlier in the year, but all needed to be reviewed in the light of the weather forecast and the recent heavy rainfall, (making the fording of streams impossible.)

On the Saturday, we walked from the B&B up over Winder (473m) over to Arant Haw (605m) and on to Calders (674m) before our final trig point at the Calf (676m).

It was a windy day with plenty of sunshine and clear views all round to the Lake District fells, Morcambe Bay and the Yorkshire Dales.

The overall distance for the day was 8.5 miles with an ascent of 700m, a very decent day out!

On returning to the B&B Jim plied us with cups of tea on his terrace in the sunshine

We all met up at the Red Lion pub in Sedbergh for a well-deserved evening meal and a good pint.

Sunday was forecast to be heavy rain all day, what a disappointment! But not to be deterred from getting out walking, we set off to join the Dales Way along the picturesque river Lune, finding shelter where we could….

The advantage of lots of rain is that the rivers look very impressive!

We took advantage of a shelter at the campsite to have our packed lunch.

The Dales way goes on to meet up with the Rawthey river and then the Dee where we were able to peel off into Sedbergh and found a cafe for a warming cups of tea and coffee (and cake!) before returning to the B&B on the lane.

The walk was 8 miles in length with 285m ascent, quite respectable considering the wet weather. It was certainly a good test of waterproofs!

Thanks David and Mark for a great weekend!
